Canadian Rangers and Junior Canadian Rangers

Friends of the Rangers

Many individuals have been instrumental in their support of the Canadian Rangers and Junior Canadian Rangers over the years. Some are politicians and government officials who have taken it upon themselves to re-direct funding to the two organizations. Others have used their positions in the House of Commons and Senate to encourage national interest.

We would like to offer them our thanks and publicly acknowledge their efforts on behalf of the Canadian Rangers and Junior Canadian Rangers.

If there is someone else whom you feel deserves to be added to this list, please don’t hesitate to let us know.

“Mr. Speaker, for the past 50 years the Canadian Rangers have acted as guides and advisors to the Canadian Forces as well as performing search and rescue duties in northern remote and isolated communities often in harsh weather conditions. The majority of Canadian Rangers are aboriginal, often unilingual, who have served Canada for more than 50 years.

Today at Rideau Hall 17 Canadian Rangers received the first presentation of the new Ranger Bar to the Special Service Medal which recognizes at least four years of honourable service. Many others will also be receiving this special award.

From my riding of Nunavut, Peter Kuniliusee and Jimmy Tassugat from Clyde River represented their colleagues.

I congratulate all Canadian Rangers for their outstanding dedication, and on behalf of all Canadians, thank them for their work and contribution to our great country.”

Mutna. Thank you.

“Mr. Speaker, the Nunavik Rangers are a sub-group of the Canadian Armed Forces who have existed for at least 50 years and who were a strong presence at the New Year’s avalanche in Kangiqsualujjuaq.

In 1994, the Junior Rangers, for boys and girls aged 12 to 18, was established in Northern Quebec. The 14 communities in Nunavik now have their Junior Rangers patrols. They are supported by the Canadian Armed Forces and by the Senior Rangers. In the Rangers, young Inuit learn such skills as navigation, weapons safety, ancestral traditions and hunting.

The Canadian Armed Forces and Major Claude Archambault last week visited the village of Kangiqsualujjuaq with its mayor Maggie Emdukluk to offer praise to the Rangers who participated in the rescue operations on January 1, 1999.

Nakuqmikk to the Nunavik Rangers.”
