Junior Canadian Rangers

Firearm Safety

All Junior Canadian Rangers and Rangers receive training in the safe handling and firing of their respective firearms and weapons. The importance of safety (including the wearing of safety glasses and ear defenders) is stressed at all times and members are not permitted to use the firearms until they have demonstrated sufficient awareness of the four vital acts of firearm safety.

The four vital ACTS of firearm safety are as follows:

A - assume every rifle is loaded.
C – control the muzzle direction at all times (point it down the range).
T – trigger finger … keep your finger off the trigger and out of the trigger guard.
S – see that the rifle is unloaded.

Rangers and Junior Canadian Rangers are also required to PROVE that they can safely handle a firearm by:

The four vital ACTS of firearm safety are as follows:

P - point rifle in the safest possible direction (down range)
R – remove all pellets (unload)
O – observe the chamber (make sure it’s empty)
V – verify the feed path
E – examine the bore

All marksmanship activity occurs under the watchful eye of a specially trained, experienced, Range Safety Officer and his/her staff.
