Junior Canadian Rangers - Training

Sharing Circle

a JCR master - corporalThe Sharing Circle is a concept that has long been used by many Aboriginal People as a way to share their opinions in a non-confrontational, inclusive manner. Although there are many different adaptations (such as the use of a talking stick), the underlying premise remains the same – to provide a safe and welcoming environment for an open and equal conversation.

The Junior Canadian Ranger Programme has embraced the Sharing Circle concept as an ideal way to conduct many of their meetings and to begin their training sessions. By gathering together in a group with a pre-determined set of rules, participants often feel more comfortable expressing their views and are frequently more receptive to learning new concepts and ideas.

The following guidelines are common to Sharing Circles:

  • Everyone is equal in the circle
  • Everyone gets a chance to share, including the leader
  • Anyone can choose not to speak
  • There are no interruptions, probing, put-downs or gossip
  • Time is shared equally
  • The circle is closed by thanking everyone for being there
