Canadian Rangers - Good News Stories

Canadian Rangers are invaluable members of their communities. Canadian Rangers are integral members of the Canadian Forces and they provide an essential service to the people of Canada. In the past Canadian Rangers have reported unidentified vessels in Canadian waters, assisted in countering illegal immigration on the West Coast, and responded quickly and efficiently to disaster situations. They also provide humanitarian assistance when disaster strikes, along with their regular responsibilities.

It’s easy to take the services and achievements of the Canadian Rangers for granted. The majority of them are modest and even shy about promoting their good deeds and accomplishments. “Saving a life is just part of my job” seems to be the prevalent attitude.

But it’s important that they know how proud we are of them and how much we are indebted to them for helping make our country a better place. This is the place to show them our feelings and to share our thanks.

To get you started, we would like to share two good news stories of our own.

Until New Year’s Day, 1999, few Canadians south of the 60th parallel had ever heard of, let alone pronounced, the name of a small town on the eastern shore of Ungava Bay, Quebec. That changed, however, when an avalanche roared down on Kangiqsualujjuaq, burying many townspeople and leaving nine dead. The community grieved for and buried their relatives. In the close-knit town of 650 people, no one was left untouched….

In August 2000, Corporal Salomon Curley of Hall Beach, Nunavut, became the first-ever Canadian Ranger to compete and qualify for the Queen’s Medal Match at the annual Canadian Forces Small Arms Competition (CFSAC).
