Police Services

The Deputy Provost Marshal Police (DPM Police) is responsible for providing several Police advisory and technical services within the Department of National Defence. These responsibilities include:

Investigation Services

DPM Police is responsible for certain quality assurance measures of all Military Police investigation reports. DPM Police staff provides technical advice to all Military Police units including units deployed outside Canada.

Police Policy

DPM Police develops and distributes formal Military Police policy. It also provides updates on policy changes through Police Policy Bulletins. The Military Police Policies and Technical Procedures are contained in the A-SJ-100-004/AG-000.

The Criminal Code of Canada and the National Defence Act are the main influences relevant to Military Police policies.

Liaison

DPM Police personnel communicate regularly with other police agencies on law enforcement matters of mutual interest. DPM Police is the primary point of reference concerning Memoranda of Understanding entered into by any Military Police unit and civilian counterparts. DPM Police also provides national level direction to all Military Police units regarding matters pertaining to the Canadian Police Information Center (CPIC).

DPM Police also participates in the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police activities and obtains the latest on all law enforcement practices, new prevention programs, and changes to the Criminal Code.

It is responsible for the exchange of police information with other police agencies. This provides an opportunity to keep current on new law enforcement techniques or new technology while ensuring a standardized application of the law.

Security and Military Police Information System (SAMPIS)

Military Police utilize the commercially available Versadex model of information generation, maintenance and retrieval. The position of DPM Police has been designated as the SAMPIS Manager, while DPM Police personnel conduct quality assurance of information and help-desk assistance to users.

Administration

The DPM Police personnel are also responsible to

  • Maintain a databank on Military Police reports;
  • Reply to Ministerial Inquiries, Summary Investigations, and Boards of Inquiry; and
  • Respond to requests for Military Police-generated information under the Access to Information and Privacy Acts.
