Naval Centennial Project: Call for Artists - Update May 2006

This notice is to advise that, in light of the significant and continued interest generated by this naval centennial painting project and to allow members of the established Canadian art community who missed the original notice an opportunity to compete, the Canadian Navy is pleased to announce that indications of interest for the painting project will be received until 31 July 2006. Artist’s study submissions, as described herein, are requested by 01 December 2006.

Along with the 10” X 12” artist study, artists are to include their cost for: a completed 36” x 24” painting; the granting to the Crown full title to and copyright in the works; and, the permanent waiver of all the artist’s moral rights in the works, in the event that the work(s) is selected. Each chosen painting would be reproduced for 50 artist’s proofs, 500 signed prints and other smaller unsigned prints and cards. Artistic merit and historical accuracy are the determining factors for painting selection. A legal contract, between selected artists and the Crown, will specify each party’s obligations regarding the submission of the final painting.

All original artist’s studies will be returned. In early winter 2007 the jury, or selection committee, will meet to review the paintings; artists will be advised of the results, in writing, shortly after that. Final (36” X 24”) paintings will be due in spring 2009.

A copy of the selection committee’s terms of reference will be forwarded to those who submit a letter of interest to the following address:
