About the "look" of the site

The VCDS Web site has been designed to adhere to two complimentary design standards: the Government of Canada Common Look and Feel (CLF); and the National Defence Web Publishing Standards. The stated goal of both standards is to provide a common user experience on any Government of Canada web site. It should be easy for any Canadian citizen (or other interested parties) to move from any Government of Canada web site to another, without needing to learn new ways of "getting around". That being said, there is some flexibility in the design of the content within each web page or site. This document will hopefully answer any questions you might have about getting around the VCDS web site.

Navigational Tools

Icon Bar
The Icon Bar appears on some pages of the VCDS site, and provides access to some very useful tools.

Regulations and Orders of the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Forces.
Accommodation and Car Rental Directory for Government Employees. (Internet Site)
Canada 411 - The popular Bell Canada phone directory, where you can search for individuals or businesses. (Internet Site)

Not sure which icon goes where? Just move your mouse pointer over each graphic, and leave it there for a few seconds. All the most recent browsers will show you a "tool tip" for that graphic, describing what the button does.

Internal Document Navigation
Some longer documents have been broken up into sections. You will always begin with a table of contents. Once a section or chapter has been selected, the graphics shown here will be available to move forward and back within the document.

You see this graphic on all pages where navigation is available.

Click once here in order to go directly to the table of contents for the current document.

Click this button to move back through the document.

Click this button to move forward through the document.

The navigation buttons described above will only "light up" when you can perform that action. For example, if you are currently looking at Chapter 1, you will not be able to click on the "back" button. You will only be able to click the table of contents or forward buttons.

Top of Page Button
The "Top of Page" button will appear at several points, depending on the length of the content. It always appears on the footer of every page. However, if the contents are long enough, "Top of Page" buttons may also appear, along the right side of the page, at various points through the text. Simply clicking on any button will bring you back to the start of the page you are currently viewing.

Common Questions

Why are some features not working correctly on my screen?
This site is best viewed with version 4 and above of the most common browsers (Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator). While every effort has been made to ensure that the site is viewable on the most common browsers, some older versions may not fully support the code used to display the pages. If you are using an older browser, we suggest that you look into upgrading to the latest version. Alternatively, you can try to view this site using any other browser you might have on your computer.

Why do I get a new window when I click on some links?
In some cases, links to content located on independant servers will create a new browser window on your desktop. This is to help you realize you have exited our site.
