Self Help Housing

Self Help Housing consists of 545 homes, all being 3 bedroom townhouses, which are located at the Uplands site. Each unit comes with a refrigerator, gas range, fenced backyard and one parking spot. The Self Help Housing Organization (SHHO) was created in 1961 to provide affordable housing for Junior NCMs posted to the NCR.

Townhouse:

• 519 units:
  • 317 inside units, 924 sq. ft.
  • 202 end units, 924 sq. ft.

• 26 units: 944 sq. ft.
• priority given to CF members with a physically-challenged family member

Eligibility:

• Eligible members must be:
  MCpl and below, OCdt, 2Lt, or Lt
• Class B Reservists are eligible, provided they possess at least a year-long contract
• Priority for housing is:
  • Military Families and includes Single members with dependants
  • Single members are placed on a separate waiting list and are offered housing when all the family housing requirements have been met.
• If while occupying a unit of SHHO, a member is promoted to the rank of Sgt/PO2, he/she is authorised to retain the Unit until the member is posted or voluntarily moves out.

Rental Costs:

The occupancy charge is $500.00 per month effective Sept 1 2006, plus an $8.00 mandatory community council fee. Gas & Hydro is the responsibility of the occupant. SHHO assumes financial responsibility for water, sewage and municipal taxes.

The occupancy charge is deducted through Pay Allotment for Regular Force members. Reservists are required to pay by (PAD), pre-authorised debit, certified cheque or cash. Occupancy charges are due on the first of each month.
