COLONEL M.D. Hodgson

 

Col Hodgson

 

Col Hodgson joined the Canadian Armed Forces in December 1980. Upon completion of basic training in 1982, he was posted to the 1st Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in Lahr. During the next four years he was employed in a variety of junior officer positions in A Battery.

In July 1986, he was posted to CFB Montreal, where he completed a year long French Course. Upon completion of this course he was posted to the 2nd Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, where he was employed as the Adjudant and then as the Operations Officer. He attended course 8802 of the Canadian Land Force Command and Staff College during this posting.

In July 1989, he was promoted to Major and posted to the United Nations Iran Iraq Military Observer Group for one year, where he was employed as a Team Site Leader in Al Zubyr, Iraq. Following this tour he returned to the 1st Regiment and was appointed Battery Commander of Z Battery. After personnel reductions in Canadian Forces Europe, he took command of C Battery in July 1991.

In 1992, he began the first of three postings to the 1st Canadian Division Headquarters in Kingston, where he was employed in the G3 Branch. In 1993, he was posted as a student, to the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, India. Upon completion of this course he was posted to Headquarters Land Force Command in St Hubert, where he was employed as the G3-2 Artillery.

In April 1995 he was promoted to LCol and posted to the United Nations Protection Force in Bosnia. During this period he was employed as the Chief G2/G3 in Headquarters Sector Southwest. Upon change of authority to the NATO Implementation Force, he was employed in Headquarters 3 (UK) Division, where he worked in the Joint Military Commissions Section.

He returned to the 1st Canadian Division Headquarters in April 1996, where he was employed as the G3 Artillery. Col Hodgson deployed to Uganda as part of Operation ASSURANCE in November 1996. In June 1997 he assumed command of the 1st Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, in Shilo, Manitoba. Upon completion of Command he was posted back to the Division Headquarters, where he assumed the position of G3/J3. Col Hodgson was promoted to his current rank in May 2000 and posted to the Land Force Doctrine and Training System as the Director of Army Doctrine.

In Jan 2002, Col Hodgson deployed to Kuwait as the Senior Canadian Liaison Officer to the Coalition Force Land Component Command Headquarters as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. In April 2002 he was tasked as a Member of the Tarnak Farm Board of Inquiry.

In August 2002, Col Hodgson was posted as Commander 2 Area Support Group, in Land Force Central Area. He deployed to Kabul Afghanistan as the Operation Athena National Command Element Commander, in July 03. Upon completion of this tour, he was posted as Director Army Training, in the Land Force Doctrine and Training System.

In June 2005, Col Hodgson was posted to his current position as Director of Professional Development in the Canadian Defence Academy Headquarters.

Col Hodgson completed a Bachelor of Science Degree at Memorial University in 1980 and in 1994 he completed a Masters Degree in Military Science through the University of Madras.
