Canada is not alone in recognizing the need for an organization to spearhead the intellectual and professional development of its defence team.

The U.K. created its own Defence Academy April 1, 2002, coincident with the creation of the CDA, while France has operated Institut des hautes études de défense nationale (IHEDN) since the end of the Second World War. The US pooled its defence community's intellectual resources under the National Defense University in 1976, and the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies in 1997. Australia grouped its education programs and colleges under an umbrella HQ called the Australian Defence College in 2001, and New Zealand founded its Centre for Strategic Studies, an independent national think-tank, in 1993.

The CDA is engaged with all these organizations in order to adopt best practices for the CF.
