ANCIENT ROME

Gladiator

Era: 2 nd century AD.

Situation: Events depicted in this film were woven into a historical line from approximately AD 177 to AD 192 that covered the final year years of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius to the murder of his successor, Emperor Commodus in AD 192. While some of the characters did exist as named, the person portrayed by Russell Crow did not. Nevertheless, the film is a reasonable depiction of Roman military and social life of that era. From a leadership perspective it plays heavily on the exemplified traits honour, duty and loyalty.

Primary Actors: Russell Crow, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielson, Oliver Reed, Derek Jacobi, Djimon Hounsou, and Richard Harris.

VHS 87029, ISBN 0-7832-5051-7, Colour / 165 Min., Universal / DreamWorks Home Entertainment, 2000.

Masada

Era: 1 st century AD.

Situation: Jewish Revolt AD 66-70 - Three year Roman siege of Jewish Zealots in the winter palace of Herod the Great on Mount Masada, Ad 70 - 73. In this film, strong leadership traits by both the commander of the Roman siege army and that of Masada's defenders are showcased. The innovation and tenacity of each commander is clearly evident under adversity. Leadership challenges over a long combat duration exists for both the besiegers and the defenders. It is a circumstance of endurance by a disciplined, well trained, organized, and equipped attacking force against a determined non-military defender, encumbered with many non-combatants. In the end, the final leadership decision taken to deny victory to the Romans offers an interesting perspective.

Primary Actors: Peter O'Toole, Peter Strauss, Anthony Quayle, Barbara Carrera, Alan Feinstein, Denis Quilley, Paul L. Smith, Giulia Pagano, David Warner.

VHS 66025 / 5142-1, Colour / 131 Min., Universal / MCA Videocassette Inc., 1981.
