BOXER REBELLION (THE)

55 Days in Peking

Era: 20 th century.

Situation: Boxer Uprising - China - 1900. This account of the unsuccessful Boxer (Society of Harmonious Fists) rebellion focuses on the Boxer siege of the Foreign Legation within the Chinese capital of Peking, 19 June - 14 August 1900. The film clearly illustrates the backing of the rebellion by the Dowager Empress Tzu Hsi. Leadership examples, both good and bad and institutional and personal abound. Leadership of the international factions in the defence of the legation under siege is prominent as is the distant and indirect leadership of the dowager over the Boxers.

Primary Actors: Charlton Heston, Ava Gardener, and David Niven.

VHS 217, Colour / approximately 150 min., Best Film and Video Corp., 1963.
