Chair of Defence Management Studies

The Security and Defence Forum is a National Defence grant program with a mandate to develop and support a domestic competence and national interest in defence issues of current and future relevance to Canada.

The Department of National Defence supports one Chair of Defence Management Studies at a Canadian university with a view to developing theories, skills and concepts required to manage and make decisions within the Canadian defence establishment. This aim is met primarily through a program comprised of advanced research, teaching and outreach, with a particular emphasis on research. The Chair complements Centre of Expertise activities and maintains a leadership role in furthering questions of defence policy, defence economics, defence-related social issues, and defence administration and resource management. Information on the Master’s of Public Administration/Specialization in Defence Management program, coordinated by the Chair, is located below.

Master of Public Administration/Specialization in Defence Management

The defence of Canada involves protecting our national sovereignty, cooperating with the United States in the security of North America and participating in peacekeeping and other multilateral operations in other regions of the world. These activities require members of the Canadian defence establishment to make choices and decisions every day that significantly affect the defence and security of Canada now and in the future.

The new Specialization in Defence Management is designed to provide members of the Canadian Armed Forces and the Department of National Defence and other persons with the special knowledge and skills needed to manage defence policy today. Douglas Bland, Chair of Defence Management Studies, coordinates this offering.

Core courses include policy analysis, governance, organizational leadership and economics. Seminar courses on such topics as defence decision-making, defence economics and budgeting, capital acquisition and procurement, the defence industrial base and civil-military relations are offered as part of the specialization.

MPA programs are designed for entry-level and mid-career professionals. The one-year MPA is designed for recent university graduates and others able to pursue full-time studies. The Professional MPA program is a two-year, part-time program for experienced officers and executives.
