Operation GLADIUS - United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF)

CEFCOM BG–06.006 - August 18, 2006

United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) was established in 1974 following the agreed disengagement of the Israeli and Syrian forces on the Golan Heights.   UNDOF continues to supervise the implementation of the agreement and cease-fire.

Canada’s contribution to UNDOF, which began in 1974, originally comprised 226 military personnel to supervise the cease-fire, and establish a buffer zone between the two countries.  As of March 2006, 12,000 soldiers, sailors and air personnel have served in the Golan Heights.

Currently, two senior officers are serving on this mission; one as the Military Assistant to the UN Commander and the other as the Senior Staff Officer at UNDOF Headquarters.
