CIMI - Consortium
for the Interchange of Museum Information
"Since its founding in 1990, CIMI has been dedicated to encouraging
the use of standards by finding the standard, creating consensus
around it, testing it, and disseminating it to the museum community"
6. CIMI has now ceased operation but the following CIMI projects are still available:
CIMI has also produced the:
Dublin Core
Metadata Initiative
"The Dublin Core Metadata Initiative is an open forum engaged
in the development of interoperable online metadata standards
that support a broad range of purposes and business models"7.
Important resources include:
Networked Knowledge Organization
Systems/Services (NKOS)
"NKOS is devoted to the discussion of the functional and data
model for enabling knowledge organization systems (KOS), such
as classification systems, thesauri, gazetteers, and ontologies,
as networked interactive information services to support the
description and retrieval of diverse information resources through
the Internet"8. The
NKOS site contains many useful resources including a draft Taxonomy
of Knowledge Organization Systems which defines terms
such as thesauri, ontologies, and semantic networks.
Association for Moving Image
Archivists (AMIA)
"The Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) is a non-profit
professional association established to advance the field of
moving image archiving by fostering cooperation among individuals
and organizations concerned with the collection, preservation,
exhibition and use of moving image materials"9.
As part of its work, AMIA works to "develop and promote professional
standards and practices for moving image archival materials".
