PUBLICIST–Communications Department (full-time position to September 30, 2007)
Reporting to the Director, Communications, the Publicist is responsible for promoting Museum activities and events through print and broadcast and online media, and for maintaining ongoing media liaison locally, nationally and internationally.
RESPONSIBILITIES: - Plans, researches and implements publicity for Museum activities, including galleries, exhibitions, curatorial research, programs, retail and food and beverage operations, fundraising events and other newsworthy events, as assigned; - Maintains and develops media contacts at the local, national and international levels to ensure ongoing media coverage of Museum events and activities; assists in maintaining the ROM’s media database; - Writes and edits a variety of publicity materials (including press releases, interview briefing papers which outline questions potentially facing ROM spokespeople, biographies, backgrounders, public service announcements, listings), and other information materials (including sections of the ROM website and newsletter), and assists by outlining key points for speeches; - Acts in liaison with other Museum departments and Museum partners to exchange information; as part of the communications team, responds to media requests for information on all Museum activities, and either conducts, or facilitates, appropriate servicing; - Organizes radio, television and print interviews; coordinates media visits to the Museum, including booking and supervising photo and TV shoots; organizes and assists with media events, including news conferences and media previews for exhibitions; - Briefs event spokespersons on ways to give effective print and broadcast interviews; organizes media previews; and creates contra media promotions; - Coordinates still photography and videotape requests for publicity and event promotions, and coordinates design and production of printed materials for media publicity purposes; assists in coordination of translation of media materials into French; - Performs other related duties, as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS: - University degree or three (3) year community college diploma in a journalism, public relations or communications program OR an acceptable equivalent in education and experience; - At least two years’ professional experience in dealing with local, national and international print and broadcast media preferably in the cultural or arts/entertainment sectors; - Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; - Proven organizational skills, including project management skills in planning and implementing media campaigns; - Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, work under pressure, take initiative, and to work in a team environment; - Previous word processing experience, Microsoft Word/Office would be an asset; - Proficient French and other language skills would be an asset
STARTING DATE: January 2007
SALARY: $38,537 - $44,043 (full-time, 100% annual equivalent)
PROBATIONARY PERIOD: 6 months
