Heritage Day

Canada's heritage is rich, multifaceted and continually evolving. It is the unique places and spaces that we inhabit and that have meaning for us over time. Our heritage is also the expression of our culture through what is intangible - shared stories, values, knowledge, symbols, languages, customs and traditions.

Heritage is our collective treasure, given to us and ours to bequeath to our children. It lives on within each of us, be it the customs and traditions of our families or the extraordinary landscapes that characterize Canada. Our neighbourhoods reflect the traditions of our communities and the museums, archives, historical societies and libraries that surround us are gateways to the discovery of our past, present and future.

Heritage Day was established in 1973 by the Heritage Canada Foundation, and is celebrated the 3rd Monday of February to encourage the preservation and promotion of Canada's nationally significant historic, architectural, natural and scenic heritage.

The Department of Canadian Heritage, along with national museums and the National Library and Archives of Canada, works with diverse parties across Canada to ensure that our heritage is not only preserved, but also promoted and enhanced. All Canadians are invited to celebrate Heritage Day by learning about Canada's immense historical, cultural and natural heritage. Discover all of its beauty, diversity and vitality.
