Performing Arts Facilities Inventory

Over the past ten years, arts and cultural activities in the City of Vancouver have grown tremendously. While there are many fine theatres which are well used, there are also many new and alternate spaces which are increasingly important to that continued growth. Since the last time the City published an inventory in 1985, many facilities have opened, closed, and changed. We have therefore undertaken a new inventory of both performance spaces (facilities which provide for a public audience) and rehearsal spaces (where no public is involved). We have also invited several municipal performance facilities in the Lower Mainland to be included in the database as well.

The purpose of the inventory is to provide a comprehensive listing of all performance and rehearsal facilities in Vancouver including detailed information on stage and seating configurations, rehearsal room dimensions, lobby and public areas, technical equipment, etc. as well as rental rates and policies. The information and photographs contained in the database were provided by each facility. We will endeavour to keep the information current; however, we rely on the facility to provide accurate and timely data.

The database is searchable a number of different ways.

Name of Facility - the name of the building - i.e. the Roundhouse Community Centre
Name of Venue - the specific name of each theatre - i.e. the Roundhouse Performance Centre and the Roundhouse Community Centre Dance Studio are Venues within the Roundhouse Community Centre Facility
Operating Organization - the name of the organization which operates the theatre - may or may not be the same as the Facility or Venue name
Neighbourhood - sorts geographically by the 23 Vancouver neighbourhoods - i.e. Killarney, Sunset, West End, etc. plus Other for Lower Mainland and University Endowment Lands
Facility Type - i.e. theatre, church, studio, community centre, etc.
Audience Capacity of Venue - i.e. under 150, 151-300, 301-1,000 etc.
Primary Use of Venue - i.e. rehearsal or performance
