XX Winter Olympic Games, February 10-26, 2006
For 17 days in February, Torino, Italy will be the Winter Sports Capital of the World. About 2,500 athletes from 85 countries will compete in 84 events in 15 sports.

Canada's 2006 Winter Olympic Team
Canada's 2006 Winter Olympic team includes 200 athletes and about 220 support staff. This includes coaches, team leaders, mission staff, trainers and other health care professionals.

Olympic Facts
- At the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, more than 2,000 athletes from more than 70 nations competed in 78 events.
- Canada won 17 medals at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.
- The first Olympic Winter Games were staged in Chamonix, France in 1924. 294 athletes from 16 countries competed in 14 events. For the next 68 years, the Winter Games were held the same year as the Summer Games.
- In 1994, a two-year cycle was implemented. Winter and Summer Games alternate every two years.
- Half of the current events on the 2006 Olympic programme have been added since 1984.
- About 1.5 million spectators are expected to attend the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino.
- About 4 million viewers worldwide are expected to watch the Games on TV.
- About 10,000 media representatives will be accredited for the Games.
