E-commerce is the process of buying and selling through electronic
communication; these transactions, such as credit purchase, are
carried out on the Internet. Incorporating e-commerce into web sites
could provide museums and other heritage institutions with the capability
to generate additional revenue, donations, and memberships. However,
incorporation of e-commerce requires the technical capability to
supply a secure Web site for transactions. Although e-commerce has
its benefits it can be costly; there may be monthly processing fees,
bank fees and reserve fees associated with each sale.
