ARTS IN THE SCHOOLS

CultureCanada.gc.ca has assembled this collection of federal and provincial resources on Arts in the Schools. The list includes information on contests, funding programs for school projects, rosters of artists and more.


Federal Government  
National Arts Centre: Education and Outreach
  Canada’s National Arts Centre, located in Ottawa, offers a range of activities for students and teachers at all levels. Programming for schools includes Student Matinees at the NAC, Musicians in the Schools, Professional Development for Teachers, and Student Open Rehearsals. Their brochure, 2006-2007 NAC Programmes for Students and Teachers, is available in PDF format.
   
Canadian Heritage: Contests
  Canadian Heritage sponsors a number of contests for students to hone their creative skills:
 
Alberta  
Artists and Education Program
  The Alberta Foundation for the Arts' Artists and Education program enables schools to bring professional Alberta artists into their classrooms for residency programs ranging from one to thirty days in length. Available artists are posted on the Artists and Arts Education Roster.
 
British Columbia  
ArtsStarts
  Funded in part by the British Columbia Arts Council, ArtsStarts offers artist-in-residence programs, a performing arts showcase, booking services and more.
 
Manitoba  
School and Community Arts Program
  Three programs are available through this joint initiative of Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth and Manitoba Culture, Heritage and Tourism: The Arts Education Access Program, After School Arts Enrichment Programming, and the Youth Performing Arts Travel Grant.
 
New Brunswick  
Artists in Schools Program
  The Artists-In-Schools Program, which places professional artists in rural and urban schools, is designed to broaden and develop the arts education program by bringing together the creative potential of students and the unique energy of artists. The primary purpose of the program is to enhance a student's artistic perception and appreciation.
 
Newfoundland and Labrador  
ArtsSmarts Newfoundland and Labrador
  The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council administers this program, which funds school-based projects that integrate the arts into school curricula.
 
Northwest Territories  
Northwest Territories Arts Council
  The Northwest Territories Arts Council funds a number of artistic projects, including projects for schools and community organizations. The Arts Council's Funding Guidelines and Application are available in PDF format
 
Nova Scotia  
  Youth Program (PDF)
  The Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage provides government assistance to not-for-profit organizations involved in youth arts training and development. The program also provides support to artists-in-schools, as well as Nova Scotia festivals and competitions involving youth arts.
 
Nunavut  
  Culture and Heritage Funding
  Nunavut's Department of Culture, Language, Elders and Youth offers funding for individuals and organizations that are involved in the promotion, creation, presentation or study of the arts in Nunavut.
 
Ontario  
Artists in Education
  Provides project grants to allow professional artists from all artistic expressions and cultures to provide in-depth learning experiences for Ontario educators and learners. Successful applicants are placed on a roster for a one-year term.
 
Arts Education Projects
  The Arts Education Projects program supports projects that link artists and learners of all ages, providing artistic opportunities both within and outside the educational system.
 
Aboriginal Arts Education Projects
  The Aboriginal Arts Education program provides opportunities for arts education projects where Aboriginal artists can engage learners in their language, culture and artistic practices.
 
Prince Edward Island  
ArtsSmarts PEI
  Administered by the PEI Department of Education, ArtsSmarts PEI is part of the Canada-Wide ArtsSmarts Initiative, aimed at improving the lives and learning capacity of Canadian children by injecting arts into academic programs.
 
Quebec  
Culture in the Schools (PDF)
  The Culture in the Schools Program is designed to encourage teachers, together with artists, writers and professional cultural organizations, to implement cultural activities in the schools. The program also offers a Directory of Culture and Education Resources (available in French only) listing hundreds of artists, writers and cultural organizations available to schools in Quebec.
 
Revue Art et Culture à l'école (in French only)
  A quarterly magazine, published by the Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport du Québéc, on culture in the schools.
 
Saskatchewan  
ArtsSmarts Saskatchewan
  Administered by the Saskatachewan Arts Board, ArtsSmarts Saskatchewan is intended for special, innovative projects that enhance students' learning and bring students in contact with professional arts and arts organizations. The program is part of the Canada-wide ArtsSmarts educational initiative.
 
Yukon  
Yukon Art Centre Artist in the School Program
  Funded by the Department of Business, Culture and Tourism, the Artist in the School program facilitates the placement of professional artists into the classrooms of Yukon school children.
 
Arts Fund
  The Arts Fund supports group projects that support the principles of the Yukon Arts Policy and foster the creative development of the arts. Funding is for arts-focussed projects, including literary, visual or performing arts. The grant is for organizations, including artist collectives and school councils.
