  • New for you - Making each visit to the VMC a special occasion

Canadian museums are constantly creating new virtual exhibits that bring to life Canada’s diverse culture, making each visit to the VMC a special occasion. Many are recognized for the exquisite and innovative way they display our stories. This month the online game 1759: From the Warpath to the Plains of Abraham received the prestigious Télé-Québec Audiovisual and Multimedia Award.

From the Pacific to the Atlantic, here’s what is new in the VMC this month:
Beauty in the Beast - The Mill at Britannia Mine is a creation by BC Museum of Mining in British Columbia. This exhibit will take you to what was once one of the largest copper mines in the world. Come explore this immense industrial building, one of the last of its kind in North America, and discover the beauty in this beast from the past.

Then travel across Canada to discover one of our most beautiful natural assets: the wetlands of Lake Saint-Pierre in Quebec. Through images, video clips and audio of Flyover Lake Saint-Pierre, this virtual exhibit produced by the Centre d'interprétation du patrimoine de Sorel, will make you feel as though you are in the middle of this amazing ecosystem.

Afterwards, make your way down the St. Lawrence Seaway to New Brunswick, where you will discover Koluskap: Wolastoqewi-atkuhkakonol - Stories from Wolastoqiyik. A creation of the New Brunswick Museum, this exhibit honours the teachings of the Wolastoqiyik ancestors.

Don’t let your visit to the VMC stop here! Take a peek at the Image Gallery, or discover the stories from some of Canada’s smaller museums through the Community Memories section.

  • Museums Designated Heritage Properties

Four heritage buildings in Prince Edward Island have recently been granted heritage property designation under that province’s Heritage Places Protection Act. The Elmira Railway Museum, the Cannery at Basin Head Fisheries Museum, and the school and church at the Orwell Corner Historic Village have all played a significant role in the province’s transportation, economic, social, educational and religious history. The properties will benefit from the preservation and legal protection that comes from the designation. You can learn more about these and other heritage attractions in Prince Edward Island in the VMC’s Find a Museum section.

  • CMC Acquires Legendary Hockey Mask

The Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) has recently acquired one of the first masks used by legendary NHL goalie Jacques Plante.  As retold in more recent times in a Historica Minute,  Plante invented the mask after being struck in the face with a hockey puck in 1959. It has since become a necessity for all hockey goalies.  The museum also acquired a collection of 67 scrapbooks devoted to Rocket Richard, a “Rocket 9” Quebec licence plate, a jigsaw puzzle of the 1952-’53 Canadiens team, and another puzzle of Richard and Elmer Lack from the 1953 Stanley Cup winning goal. Find out more about these legendary players through Hockey: Our Nation's Passion, or visit the Hockey Hall of Fame to score big in learning more about this great Canadian sport!
