ON MAY 18, CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL
MUSEUM DAY!

Since 1977, International Museum Day has been celebrated around the world. The International Council of Museums (ICOM) has selected Museums and young people as the theme for 2006. This year’s theme reminds us of the crucial role that museums play in the lives of young Canadians, as well as the equally important role that young people play in bringing museums to life.

Our museums help Canadians, particularly our youth, understand our history and articulate our role in today's changing environment. Our museums do their part to safeguard, increase awareness and promote the diverse heritage of Canadian society, allowing Canadian youth to learn and grow, individually and collectively. Every year, Canada’s museums host more than 300,000 school groups.

You can get involved in Canada's dynamic museum community. To find a museum in your community or area, visit the Museums and Events page on the Virtual Museum of Canada (VMC) website. While at the website, take a virtual tour of Canada's heritage. Dinosaur fossils, the travels of Samuel de Champlain, a deckchair from the Titanic, and hundreds of other interesting artefacts and exhibitions from Canada's museums can be found on the VMC website.
