Women's History![]() To meet its commitment to a fuller representation of Canadian history, Parks Canada is actively seeking nominations from the public for possible designations. Individuals or members of a group or organization – people like you – are the primary source of nominations for the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, which advises the Minister of Environment on designation. In fact, more than 80 percent of designations are the result of suggestions from the public. Is there a site, person or event connected to your Canadian experience – a piece of the mosaic – that relates to the underrepresented areas of women’s history including women of Aboriginal and ethnocultural descent, identified by Parks Canada? Is the subject an important part of our Canadian experience and does it speak to all Canadians? Does it contribute to the knowledge of our history and the understanding of our country? CriteriaSites may be considered nationally significant by virtue of their association with a nationally significant aspect of Canadian history. A person who, individually or as a representative of a group, made an outstanding and lasting contribution may be considered nationally significant. Finally, an event which represents a defining action, episode, movement or experience in Canada’s past, could be designated nationally significant. Both the System Plan and the framework studies on women’s history are helpful in providing background and contextual information on major themes in the study of women’s past, and are useful in deciding whether a site, person or event may have national significance, or whether your request might better be directed to provincial or community heritage agencies. Contact us if you’d like to know more about the women’s history initiative or any other aspect of our program: info@pc.gc.ca Parks Canada is always interested in building bridges with women and women’s organizations interested in heritage conservation and historic commemoration related to women’s history.
