Please be advised that flags on all Government of Canada buildings and establishments across the province of Nova Scotia will stay at half-mast until sunset, Saturday, December 20, 2003, in honour of the late the Right Honourable Robert L. Stanfield, P.C., Q.C. The Right Honourable Robert L. Stanfield, P.C., Q.C.

Mr. Stanfield was born on April 11, 1911 in Truro Nova Scotia. He achieved a distinguished academic record, having studied at Dalhousie and Harvard Law Schools, where he was a top honours student. In 1949, he was elected Leader of the Nova Scotia Conservative Party at the age of 34.

In 1956, he was elected Premier of his Province, a position to which he was re-elected three times with ever increasing majorities. As Premier, he was credited with the creation of vocational schools, hospital insurance, a modernized road system, and ongoing committed support to education on all levels. Indeed, he was the first Conservative Premier in the history of Nova Scotia to win four consecutive majority governments. He occupied the position with great distinction until 1967, when he was elected National Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. He served from 1967 until 1976 as the Leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition and, sixteen years later, was granted the title "The Right Honourable" (1992). He was also granted numerous honorary doctoral degrees from numerous universities and colleges.

Mr. Stanfield will be fondly remembered for his distinguished career as well as his commitment and contribution to both his province and country.

The National Flag of Canada will be flown at half-mast on the Peace Tower in Ottawa and on all Government of Canada buildings and establishments across Canada from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, December 6, 2003, to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

November 18, 2003
Flags at the Canadian Embassy in Rome will be flown at half-mast, Tuesday, November 18, 2003 the day of the state funeral for the 19 Italian victims of the terrorist attack in Iraq.

Remembrance Day
To honour the memory of all Canadians who have served their country in time of war, the National Flag of Canada will be flown at half-mast on all Government of Canada buildings and establishments across Canada from sunrise to sunset on Remembrance Day, Tuesday, November 11, 2003.

Should half-masting occur at/near a cenotaph or another site where remembrance services are being observed, half-masting can occur at 11:00 a.m. (or according to the prescribed order of service) and extend until sunset. In this regard, the flag on the Peace Tower in Ottawa will fly at half-mast from the commencement of the service at the National War Memorial and remain in that position until sunset.

October 2, 2003
Further to our previous notification that the flag on the Peace Tower in Ottawa be flown at half-mast from time of notification to sunset on Thursday, October 2, 2003, please be advised that flags on Government of Canada buildings in Petawawa shall be flown at half-mast from sunrise on Wednesday, October 8 to sunset Thursday October 9, 2003, the day of the funerals of Sergeant Robert Alan Short and Corporal Robbie Christopher Beerenfenger, who were killed while on active duty in Afghanistan, Thursday, October 2, 2003.

Please also be advised that the National Flag will remain at half-mast on all Land Forces establishments at home and abroad until sunset, Thursday, October 9, 2003.

Flags on all Government of Canada buildings and establishments across Canada are to be flown at half-mast from sunrise until sunset on Sunday, September 28, 2002 to commemorate the National Peace and Police Officer's Memorial Day.

Flags on the Peace Tower in Ottawa and on the Canadian Embassy in Washington and all other Canadian missions across the United States of America are to be flown at half-mast from sunrise until sunset on Thursday, September 11, 2003 to commemorate the tragic events of that day in 2001 in the USA.

Flags at the Canadian embassy in Sweden were flown at half-mast on September 11, 2003, in honour of the death of Anna Lindh, the Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs.

August 20, 2003
The Flags on all Government of Canada buildings and establishments in the City of Hamilton, Ontario will be flown at half-mast from now until sunset the day of the funeral, Saturday, August 23, 2003, and on the Peace Tower from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, August 23, 2003, in honour of the late Honourable John Munro, P.C., Minister of the Crown from 1968 to 1978 and again from 1980 to 1984.

August 20, 2003
Flags at the Canadian Embassy in Brazil were flown at half-mast from August 20, 2003 to August 23, 2003, in honour of the death of Sergio Vieira de Mello, UN special representative to Baghdad in a bombing in Iraq on August 19, 2003. Mr. Vieira de Mello was a Brazilian citizen.

August 13, 2003
The Flags on all Government of Canada buildings and establishments in the City of Toronto, Ontario will be flown at half-mast from now until sunset the day of the funeral, Friday, August 15, 2003, and on the Peace Tower from sunrise to sunset on the day of the funeral, Friday, August 15, 2003, for the late Honourable Martin Patrick O'Connell, P.C., Ph.D., Minister of State in 1971 and Minister of Labour in 1972 and 1978.

August 5, 2003
The Flags on all Government of Canada buildings and establishments across the province of Newfoundland and Labrador will be flown at half-mast from now until sunset Tuesday, August 5, 2003, the day of the funeral of the late the Honourable Gordon A. Winter, O.C, LL.D., former Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador.

June 3, 2003
The Flag on the Peace Tower in Ottawa will be flown at half-mast from 9:00 am to 10:30 am on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 to honour former parliamentarians who have passed away in the last year.

May 13, 2003
The Flags on all Government of Canada buildings and establishments across Nova Scotia, will be flown at half-mast from now until sunset Friday, May 16, 2003, the day of the memorial service, to honour the late Dr. John Savage, O.C., O.N.S., former Premier of Nova Scotia.

The flag on the Peace Tower will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset Thursday, May 8, 2003, to honour the memory of His Excellency Miodrag Perisic, Ambassador of Serbia and Montenegro in Canada.

April 29, 2003
The Flag on all Government of Canada buildings and establishments in the city of Vancouver, British Columbia, will be flown at half-mast from now until sunset on Monday, May 5, 2003, the day of the funeral. The Flag will also be flown at half-mast on the Peace Tower in Ottawa from sunrise until sunset on Monday, May 5, 2003, the day of the funeral to honour the late the Honourable Rosemary Brown, P.C., O.C., O.B.C.

The Flag on the Peace Tower in Ottawa and on all Government of Canada buildings and establishments across Canada will be flown at half mast from sunrise to sunset Wednesday, April 28, 2004, to mark this Day of Mourning for Persons Killed or Injured in the Workplace.

The National Flag of Canada will be flown at half-mast on the Peace Tower in Ottawa from sunrise to sunset Wednesday, April 9, 2003, to mark this National Day of Remembrance of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

The National Flag of Canada will be flown at half-mast on the Canada Place complex in Edmonton and on the Henry Hays Building in Calgary from sunrise to sunset on Monday, March 31, 2003, in honour of the late Mr. Edward Glancefield Hole, spouse of the Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Alberta.
