Inverarden House National Historic Site of CanadaVisitor InformationBuilt in 1816 as a retirement home for John McDonald of Garth, a former trading partner of the North West Company, Inverarden House is a significant early example in Ontario of Regency architecture. Historically, it is associated with the settlement in Eastern Ontario of several partners of the North West Company, the renowned explorers David Thompson and Simon Fraser, and John Macdonell and Hugh McGillis. Parks Canada acquired the house in 1970 and carried out an extensive restoration project to take it back to its appearance in the 1820s. After the restoration, it served for many years as an historic house museum operated by the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Historical Society. The museum was relocated in 2000.
