The Curator of Collections position is responsible for collections management including research, documentation, development, implementation, budget development and administration; the exhibitions program including research, documentation, development, implementation, budget development and administration; supervision/training of staff, contract/grant staff and volunteers assisting with collections management and the exhibition program; prepare regular reports on collection management, preservation, conservation, exhibit and research; at two museum sites. This position reports to the Museums Manager.
The successful candidate will possess a post secondary degree in Museum Studies or equivalent. Directly related experience will be an asset. The individual should be able to work with the public, volunteers and be computer literate.

Billy Bishop Heritage and Owen Sound Marine & Rail Museums Job Description

Position Title: Museums Curator of Collections

Reports To: Museum Manager

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for collections management including research, documentation, development, implementation, budget development and administration; the exhibitions program including research, documentation, development, implementation, budget development and administration; supervision/training of staff, contract/grant staff and volunteers assisting with collections management and the exhibition program; prepare regular reports on collection management, preservation, conservation, exhibit and research; at two museum sites.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Collections Management

1.0. Develops, implements and monitors the collections management plans in accordance with museum policies.

1.0. Recommends collection management policies

1.0. Designs systems and procedures needed to manage the collections.

1.0. Maintains and supervises maintenance of artifacts in storage and through the museums.

1.0. Supervises and completes artifact cataloguing, including numbering, physical description, photography and placement in storage.

1.0. Recommends approval or disapproval of loan requests.

1.0. Packs and ships artifacts for approved loans.

1.0. Supervises collection access.

1.0. Recommends acquisition of artifacts as per museum collection policies.

1.0. Prepares appraisals in accordance with the Federal Government’s Tax Act.

1.0. Recommends and administers annual collections budget

Preservation and Conservation:

1. Monitors and maintains all aspects of the collection environment, including areas of exhibition, storage, and security.

1. Recommends or completes preventative conservation measures or conservation actions for the heritage buildings, all artifacts, archives and textiles.

1. Evaluates condition of artifacts on outgoing and returning loans.

1. Establishes procedures for access and use of the collections, archival materials and documents and library.

1. Recommends and administers annual conservation budget.

Exhibit Program:

1. Develops and oversees the implementation of the on-site and off-site exhibition program.

1. Assists with artifact selection for exhibits.

1. Recommend and oversees the administration of the exhibition program budget.

Research Program:

1. Recommends research policies and procedures.

1. Develops and implements the research program.

1. Conducts research related to the study of collections, exhibits, historic sites or local history.

1. Answers research requests from professionals, public and organizations.

Supervisory Role:

Supervises exhibit technicians and volunteers in the performance of their duties in the areas of collections, research, interpretation and exhibition.

Provides orientation and training of staff, volunteers in related areas.

Supervises the care, handling and access of the collection.

Working Conditions:

1.Some desk/office/computer work will be required

1.Appropriate dress attire

1.Full time position, 35 hours per week, including evenings and weekends as required. Job is divided equally between the Billy Bishop Heritage Museum and the Owen Sound Marine & Rail Museum.

1.Day to day work will be subject to frequent interruptions.

1.Accept other duties prescribed by the Museum Manager

Skills & Qualifications

1. Post-Secondary degree in Museum Studies or equivalent.

1. Strong written and oral communication skills

1. The ability to deal with both the public and board members.

1. Familiarity with policies, procedures, aims and objectives of museums.

1. The ability to oversee and train staff and volunteers, as required.

1. The ability to focus and achieve in a multi task situation

1. Must be able to prioritize

1. Must work as part of a team

1.Must have a valid drivers license

10. Computer literate
