FORT STEELE HERITAGE TOWN

The Friends of Fort Steele Society is seeking an exceptional leader to work with staff, volunteers and communities to:
· Manage a heritage site using the best practices of the heritage tourism industry,
· Increase income through attendance, commercial ventures, grants and fund raising,
· Preserve, maintain and upgrade Fort Steele Heritage Town assets consisting of heritage buildings, artifacts and operating infrastructure.

Fort Steele Heritage Town is a living museum incorporating many heritage buildings, approximately 300,000 artifacts and an extensive archive collection.

Fort Steele is represented as an 1890’s frontier town depicting life in the Kootenays at the turn of the 20th century. The site attracts 100,000 visitors each year and is a significant economic contributor to the nearby communities of Cranbrook and Kimberley, BC.

The successful candidate will be required to supervise 6-8 year round staff, approximately 90 seasonal staff and up to 300 volunteers associated with a variety of maintenance, curatorial and heritage programs.

Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in a business management field with emphasis on heritage and cultural resource management and/or tourism. Five to seven years experience in business or organizational management in the cultural resource and/or tourism sectors, in addition to directing and supervising staff under a collective agreement is preferred. A strong background in financial management and demonstrated success in marketing and fund raising is required.
