L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site of CanadaVisitor InformationHow to Get HereL'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site is located on the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula, 433 km north of Deer Lake along the Viking Trail (route 430). The drive along this highway offers many attractions and access to southern Labrador. The traveller along the Viking Trail may wish to visit other historic sites, enjoy the natural beauty of Gros Morne National Park and take in some of the many opportunities for sightseeing and wildlife viewing. The Viking Trail begins at the town of Deer Lake located along the Trans Canada Highway (route 1). As you head north on the Viking Trail towards St. Anthony you will pass through Gros Morne National Park. Continuing north towards St. Anthony, you pass by Port Saunders. Here you can take a short 15 km detour towards Port au Choix National Historic Site. From Port Saunders continue on the Viking Trail to the junction with route 436, about 20 km before St. Anthony. Follow route 436 for 30 km to L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site. Along this final leg of the journey you pass through several small fishing communities nestled around picturesque coves. Often icebergs can be seen near the headlands of these coves. When returning from L'Anse aux Meadows you may want to visit the community of St. Anthony, the main service centre for the area and site of the Grenfell House Provincial Historic Site.
