Denis Coderre Announces A $200,000 Contribution for a National Sports Centre in Saskatchewan

REGINA, September 29, 2000 -- The Secretary of State (Amateur Sport), Denis Coderre, today announced the Government would provide $200,000 for a national sports centre in Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan has a strong tradition of producing Olympic and Paralympic calibre athletes, but until now they have not had the opportunity to access vital support services within their own province. This will enhance their ability to pursue and achieve excellence in sport.

This announcement stems from the commitment made last March to invest an additional $7.5 million annually into amateur sport. From this amount, $1.5 million was earmarked for the network of national sports centres.

"I am happy to announce this contribution and at the same time to confirm the Government of Canada's commitment to Canadian athletes and the sports sector," said Mr. Coderre. "I would also like to take this opportunity to reiterate our invitation to shareholders in the sports system to participate in the consultation process currently in development for the creation of a Canadian sports policy."

Financing of national sports centres is ensured in partnership with Sport Canada, the Canadian Olympic Association and the Coaching Association of Canada. The Saskatchewan National Sports Centre is also partnered with Sask Sport Inc., the Province of Saskatchewan, the Sport Medicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan and the Coaches Association of Saskatchewan. The objective of the network of national sports centres is to support sports excellence by providing programs and services to athletes and their coaches.

Mr. Coderre is currently in Regina participating in the third regional conference on sport which is being held until October 1, 2000.
