Sheila Copps Thanks Jack Pelech for his 32 Years of Commitment to the Canada Games Council

HAMILTON, October 1, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today recognized the devotion of Jack Pelech to the Canada Games Council for more than 32 years. A large number of guests including members of the sports community were present at a reception held in honour of Mr. Pelech.

"I am proud to recognize Mr. Pelech's contribution to amateur sport in Canada," said Minister Copps. "This man helped Canadians develop a feeling of national pride during the Canada Games. His energy and devotion have also made it possible for hundreds of Canadians to realize their dreams and become high-calibre athletes."

Born in Hamilton, Mr. Pelech has always contributed, in one way or another, to sports among young people. Mr. Pelech joined the Canada Games Council in 1969 and became Chair in 1971. A recipient of many awards of distinction in the sports field, he was awarded the Governor General's Commemorative Medal in 1992 for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada. In 2001, Minister Copps awarded Mr. Pelech the Hamilton Spirit Award. Since 1985, at the Canada Games, the Jack Pelech Award is presented to the provincial or territorial team who most distinguished themselves during the Games notably through their team spirit.

Jack Pelech has passed the torch of the Canada Games Council Chair to Mr. Larry Smith, former commissioner of the Canadian Football League.
