Denis Coderre Chairs a Round Table for National Sport Organizations and Releases Sport Participation Study

MONTREAL, February 16, 2001 -- Secretary of State (Amateur Sport) Denis Coderre today launched a two-day round table discussion for elected representatives of National Sport Organizations (NSOs) and Multi-Sport Organizations (MSOs). The purpose of the round table is to get input from the national sport community for the development of a Canadian Sport Policy.

"NSOs and MSOs play an essential role in Canada's sport system and I welcome their input in the development of a first Canadian Sport Policy," said Mr. Coderre.

The round table is the latest in a series of consultations on sport that the Secretary of State has been conducting across the country. To date, these have consisted of six regional sport conferences as well as a series of round tables with athletes, officials, and members of the Aboriginal Sport Circle. In the coming weeks, Mr. Coderre will also be hosting a round table with representatives of the media. This will be followed by a National Summit on Sport on April 27 and 28, in Ottawa, chaired by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien.

The public can get information or contribute to the sport consultation process at:

Mr. Coderre also announced the publication of a sport participation study carried out by Statistics Canada as part of the 1998 General Social Survey. The study focused on the participation in sport of Canadians aged 15 years and older. Among other things, the study found that sport participation dropped dramatically in the Canadian population: from 45% in 1992 to 34% in 1998. However, indirect participation in sport has increased. For example, coaching participation has increased by 100% and referee participation by 70%. Also, 50% more spectators attended amateur sport events.

A highlights brochure as well as a full copy of the study are available at:
