Government of Canada Announces Funding for the 2004 Summer Paralympic Games

MONTREAL, April 24, 2003 -- Secretary of State (Amateur Sport) Paul DeVillers today announced that the Government of Canada will provide $1.75 million in excellence funding over the next two years to the Canadian Paralympic Committee.

The Government of Canada will contribute $1 million to the Canada's Paralympic Team for its participation in the 2004 Summer Paralympic Games to be held in Athens, Greece from September 17 to 28, 2004. In addition, heading into Athens, the Canadian Paralympic Committee will receive $750,000 for the Paralympic Sport Review Process (PSRP). The PSRP will examine the current Paralympic sport system with the goal of improving high performance programs and achievement in Paralympic sport.

"Paralympic sport is about excellence," said Mr. DeVillers. "The Government of Canada is proud to support all Canadian athletes as they prepare for Athens. This $1.75 million commitment to our Paralympians is an important step towards achieving equity in excellence."

The mission of the Canadian Paralympic Committee is to develop and promote the Paralympic movement in Canada. It is dedicated to supporting the achievement of excellence in Paralympic sport by providing a superior level of service to Paralympic team members and other key constituents of the Canadian Paralympic movement.

"I want to congratulate the Canadian Paralympic Committee for the successful relationships that it ha s established with both the public and the private sectors," said Mr. DeVillers. "The Committee has identified some very ambitious goals in support of its Paralympic athletes over the next few years. By working together, we will create success stories at these and future Paralympic Games."
