Secretary of State Paul Devillers announces funding to increase participation in sport of Baseball

WINDSOR, August 17, 2003 -- Secretary of State (Physical Activity and Sport)
Paul DeVillers today announced funding of $100,000 to support Baseball Canada's Winterball program.

"The Winterball program is a fun and exciting way for young children to experience how sport enriches our lives," said Secretary of State DeVillers. "Through this program, more young Canadians will acquire new skills in a recreational setting and learn the personal and social benefits associated with participation in sport."

Winterball is an indoor program designed to attract new participants to the sport of baseball. The program is targeted primarily at children aged 7 to 12 and provides them with a fun sport experience in a non-competitive environment. The program includes components to educate teachers, students, and parents about the importance of creating a positive sport experience for children and the value of sport in the community.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through Sport Canada's Sport Participation Development Program. This program aims to increase participation in sport, and was developed on the basis that all Canadians should have access to and benefit from participating in quality sport activities at all levels. It focuses on collaborative efforts involving communities, schools, sport organizations, and all levels of government in the delivery of sport to Canadians.
