Special Olympics Athletes Honoured in Ottawa

OTTAWA, September 29, 2003 -- Secretary of State (Physical Activity and Sport) Paul DeVillers today honoured members of Team Canada who participated in the Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Dublin, Ireland, in June 2003.

"Canadians are very proud of our Special Olympics athletes who continue to inspire us with their passion, their enthusiasm, and their courageous competition," said Secretary of State DeVillers. "They are motivators, role models, and heroes. Today, we recognize them for all that they have achieved in their sports at the Special Olympics World Summer Games."

Twenty-five members of the team were honoured by Members of Parliament in the House of Commons and at a reception today. The athletes, coaches, and mission staff in attendance represented all six sports in which Team Canada participated: Track and Field, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Swimming, Power Lifting, Ten-Pin Bowling, and Soccer.

Canadian athletes in Dublin brought home 102 medals, including 51 Gold, 29 Silver, and 22 Bronze. Team Canada trained under Special Olympics Canada's National Team Program, which contributed greatly to its success in Dublin. This Program has garnered international attention for its innovative and sport-oriented approach to Special Olympics training.

The Special Olympics program provides sport training and competition opportunities for athletes with a mental disability. Globally, the program serves more than a million participants and is active in more than 150 countries.
