Canada and Russia to Exchange Expertise in Developing Sport Systems

MONTRÉAL, November 21, 2003 -- Secretary of State (Physical Activity and Sport) Paul DeVillers today announced the signing of a sport exchange program with the Chairman of the State Committee of the Russian Federation for Physical Culture and Sport, Viacheslav Fetisov, to exchange views and information on sport and development. This program is part of a bilateral agreement in sport signed by Canada and Russia in 2002.

"Canada and Russia are committed to promoting participation in sport and to protecting the integrity and spirit of sport," said Secretary of State DeVillers. "I am pleased that we will exchange information and expertise to improve the quality of the sport systems in both our countries. The international sport system will become stronger through this type of cooperation."
"The health of the nation depends on the successful development of physical culture and sport in our country," said Mr. Fetisov. "This agreement with Canada will help us develop and strengthen our sport system for children, youth, and women. By sharing knowledge and experience with Canada, we can develop a mass sport movement that promotes an active and healthy lifestyle."
This exchange encourages the sharing of knowledge on issues related to coaching and technical development; women in sport; anti-doping; sport policies, programs and legislation; and programs encouraging participation at all levels. It is part of Canada's ongoing efforts to increase cooperation in sport, both within Canada and internationally.

"Canada and Russia share the goal to increase participation in sport at all levels," added Secretary of State DeVillers. "In particular, we wish to increase the participation of women and persons with a disability. The activities included in this exchange program will help improve our cooperation in these areas."

The signing of this sport exchange program is the culmination of more than a year of work between Canada and Russia, with the goal to enhance the level of cooperation in sport.
