Corner Brook Awarded 1999 Canada Winter Games

OTTAWA, November 10, 1994 The Hon. Brian Tobin, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and MP for Humber-Ste. Barbe-Baie Verte, today announced on behalf of the Hon. Michel Dupuy, Minister of Canadian Heritage, and Minister responsible for Sport, that Corner Brook, Newfoundland, has been awarded the Canada Winter Games for 1999. The decision follows a review of the report of the Canada Games Council Site Evaluation Committee.

In arriving at the decision, Mr. Dupuy said the Corner Brook bid had strong support from both Newfoundland Minister Responsible for Sport, the Hon. Roger Grimes, and Mayor Ray Pollett of Corner Brook.

"As Minister responsible for Sport, I realize that friendly, national sporting events, such as the Canada Winter Games, can do so much to strengthen the ties that hold this nation together," said Mr. Dupuy. "Our best athletes, their training and support teams, as well as spectators, will come from all parts of the country to compete, while at the same time sharing their unique experiences, which is really what Canada is all about."

"With the commitments of support from the federal, provincial and municipal governments, and the eager support of the Corner Brook community-at-large, I have no doubt that the 1999 Canada Winter Games will be a great success and a tribute to the host city, " concluded Mr. Tobin.
