Minister of Canadian Heritage Names Corporate Advisory Committee for Sport

OTTAWA, January 16, 1996 Canadian Heritage Minister Michel Dupuy today announced the formation of a Corporate Advisory Committee for Sport comprised of Canadian business leaders and high-profile Canadian athletes. The Committee will be Chaired by Adam Zimmerman, O.C., F.C.A. and former Chairman and CEO of Noranda Forest Inc.

This Committee will provide advice on practical ways to increase the level of corporate support for Canada's high-performance athletes and the sport programs tailored to assist them, said Mr. Dupuy. The aim is to establish systematic and sustainable partnerships between the corporate sector and the amateur sport community for the ultimate benefit of our athletes.

The Committee membership includes representatives from sport, business, the media and academia. Key players in the sport system will also have an opportunity to meet with the Committee to explore a broad range of ideas. The Committee will hold its first meeting in February.

Sport is part of Canada's fabric and corporate support and sponsorship have a role to play in its future development, said Mr. Zimmerman. I am eager to get down to work to explore some innovative and solid plans whereby corporate Canada can contribute even more to sport in this country in a mutually beneficial way.

Establishing the Committee further demonstrates the Government's support for high- performance athletes and its recommendations will form an important component of the Government's work on a comprehensive Business Plan for sport in Canada. The Business Plan will be developed over the next 18 to 24 months, in consultation with key partners in the sport system, to ensure complementarity and efficiency in the delivery of sport programs in Canada and to identify new sources of financial support.

Both the Business Plan and the Corporate Advisory Committee complement other initiatives launched by the Minister to support Canada's high-performance athletes, such as the 25 percent increase in their monthly stipends (the first increase in more than 10 years); a ministerial athletes' advisory committee; deferred tuition credits for carded athletes; and a new initiative to develop a network of national, multi-sport training centres.
