The Government of Canada Congratulates its Athletes and Artists for their Performance at the IIIes Jeux de la francophonie

ANTANANAVIRO, September 6, 1997 -- The Honourable Don Boudria, Minister of State and Government House Leader, today applauded the excellent performances of Canadian athletes and artists at the closing ceremonies of the IIIes Jeux de la Francophonie, held at Antananarivo, capital of Madagascar. Minister Boudria represented the Honourable Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian Heritage, at these Games.

The three Canadian contingents won a total of 55 medals: 15 gold, 16 silver and 24 bronze.

"The Jeux de la Francophonie are, first and foremost, an opportunity for our athletes and artists to distinguish themselves internationally," said Mr. Boudria at the closing ceremonies.

Some 3,000 participants took part in several athletic and cultural competitions such as track and field, boxing, literature and singing. "The cultural facet together with traditional sports events are what makes these Games unique," added Mr. Boudria.

"The Government of Canada praises the people of Madagascar for the exceptionally warm welcome accorded to our artists and athletes. This perception deserves recognition and I know that the people of Madagascar hold a special place in the heart of every Canadian who attended the Madagascar Games," said Mr. Boudria.

The region of the national capital of Canada, Ottawa-Hull, will host the IVes Jeux de la Francophonie. "The region now faces the challenge of hosting the 2001 Games with as much success as those that took place in Madagascar, a challenge that we look forward to achieve," said Mr. Boudria.

Mr. Boudria concluded by inviting the States and Governments of the Francophonie to experience the hospitality of Canadians at the 2001 Games, in Ottawa-Hull.
