The Government of Canada Announces Review of Sport Funding

GLOUCESTER, Ontario, November 8, 1999 -- The Honourable Denis Coderre, Secretary of State (Amateur Sport), today announced that the review leading to the next round of federal funding for National Sport Organizations will begin before the end of 1999. The next funding cycle will cover the period from April 2001 to March 2005.

At a meeting with national sport representatives in Gloucester, Ontario, Mr. Coderre announced that in the coming weeks consultations will take place on the current funding pre-requisites followed by an open call to all organizations who wish to establish their eligibility as National Sport Organizations.

"I am pleased to announce the renewal of the Government of Canada's approach to funding for Canadian amateur sport organizations," said Mr. Coderre. "Over the next 18 months, the Government will continue to consult with the sport community as the various steps of the revision and application process take place."

In the coming months, there will be a series of consultations to review the Government of Canada's assessment criteria and minimum expectations. Assessment questionnaires will be mailed to eligible sport organizations in June 2000 with an October 2000 completion date. The Government will complete initial rankings of National Sport Organizations by January 2001. This will allow time for an appeal process before the funding cycle begins in April 2001.

The Government's review process, known as the Sport Funding and Accountability Framework, was developed by Sport Canada in 1995 in cooperation with Canadian sport organizations to determine which national sport organizations were eligible for federal funding, at what level, and under what accountability requirements. Currently, the Government of Canada provides $24 million a year in funding to 38 National Sport Organizations.
