Denis Coderre Congratulates Vanier Cup Winner

OTTAWA, November 30, 1999 -- Secretary of State (Amateur Sport) Denis Coderre today congratulated the Laval Rouge et Or (Quebec) football team who won the Vanier Cup at the Toronto Skydome over the weekend defeating the Saint Mary's Huskies (Halifax) 14-10. The Vanier Cup is the national football championship for the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU).

"I congratulate both teams for their outstanding efforts," said Mr. Coderre. "I am particularly proud of Laval's achievement which is amazing considering that Laval has only competed in the CIAU since 1996. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate running back Stephane Lefebvre who scored two touchdowns and was named the Game's most valuable player."

About 12,600 spectators were on hand to witness the Game which was televised nationally. The Government of Canada provides $342,000 to support the programs of the CIAU.
