Canada's New Government Supports Regina Sports Council

REGINA, September 18, 2006

- On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, Tom Lukiwski, Member of Parliament (Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre), today announced federal government funding for the Regina Sports Council. This support will enable the Council to coordinate the Zone 2 Coaching Certification Program, which enhances the coaching capacities of Regina's Aboriginal young people in the fields of sport and recreation and develops leaders and role models in the Aboriginal community.

"More opportunities allow for better choices, and these positive choices lead to stronger communities," said Minister Oda. "This project facilitates the participation of Aboriginal young people in Regina's recreation and sport environment, giving them a greater sense of cultural identity and belonging."

"Canada's new government is pleased to support projects that teach Aboriginal youth various life skills and encourage them to make positive life choices," said Mr. Lukiwski. "We are fostering the growth of our future community leaders."

Guided and supported by Elders and Aboriginal instructors, the Zone 2 Coaching Certification Program will increase access for Aboriginal young people to sport, culture, and recreation learning opportunities. The program will consist of various components: clinic courses on the fundamental skills of coaching, educational workshops on life skills and leadership, and a mentorship program to connect young people with Aboriginal coach mentors and Elders.

The Department of Canadian Heritage provides $15,000 in funding through its Urban Multipurpose Aboriginal Youth Centres Program. This program provides First Nations, Métis and Inuit young people aged 15 to 24, living in urban settings, with projects and activities that are culturally relevant and based in the Aboriginal community. It also supports and assists Aboriginal youth in enhancing their cultural, economic, social, and personal prospects.
