International Activities

Sport Canada is involved in a wide range of international activities which are highlighted by the following key areas:

1) Strengthening Sport Policies and Programs, part 1
1) Strengthening Sport Policies and Programs, part 2
2) Developing and Implementing international exchanges and agreements in sport
3) Supporting Canadian Excellence in International Sport
4) Supporting the Hosting of International Sport Competitions in Canada

2) Developing and Implementing international exchanges and agreements in sport

Sport Canada also enhances co-operation, collaboration and diplomatic relations between Canada and other nations through sport. This is accomplished through four main forms of international co-operation:

1) general information exchanges,
2) specific purpose agreements,
3) formal bilateral agreements, and
4) formal multilateral agreements in sport.
These provide important vehicles for the sharing of information, policy and program developments and expertise for the benefit of the various parties involved while fostering and maintaining friendly diplomatic relations through sport.

3) Supporting Canadian Excellence in International Sport

A central component of Sport Canada's work is to provide financial support to Canadian national and multi-sport organizations, and direct assistance to high performance athletes and coaches, in order to assist Canadian national team athletes to develop to the limits of their interests and abilities and to excel at major international competitions through fair and ethical means, particularly at the Olympics, Paralympics, and World Championships. This contributes to national unity and pride as Canadians support and watch our athletes pursue their goals at the highest levels of excellence and compete with the best in the world. Canadians share in our national team athlete efforts and accomplishments and draw important meanings from their performances and presence on the world stage. Our athletes' successes are an inspiration for Canadians to strive toward their own high level of personal achievement, and reflect positively on Canada's reputation in the international community as a major sporting nation.

4) Supporting the Hosting of International Sport Competitions in Canada

The Government of Canada provides financial support for the hosting of selected international single and multi-sport competitions in Canada. This provides a number of direct and significant benefits across a broad range of government priorities and objectives including: the promotion of high performance sport as a symbol of excellence, enhanced sport and cultural programs (pre and post event), facility legacies, job creation, local and regional economic development, leadership and volunteer development, and an enhanced sense of Canadian identity and pride as Canada showcases itself to the world.
