Bellevue House National Historic Site of CanadaLearning ExperiencesLearning ExperiencesA Visit to Bellevue HouseBellevue House has been restored to the late 1840s period. Its furnishings reflect the styles of the period and what is known of the Macdonald family's taste and household arrangements. The ornamental garden, orchard and kitchen garden of Bellevue House are much as they were when the Macdonalds lived here over 150 years ago. In keeping with the theories of landscaping popular in the mid-19th century, the grounds were intended to beautify the property and harmonize with the style of the house. While strolling along the garden pathways, you can savour the tranquil setting to which Macdonald brought his young family. A self-guided tour of the site begins in the Visitor Centre, where an audio-visual presentation introduces the history of the site. An exhibit highlights the personal life and political career of Sir John A. Macdonald. In Bellevue House, informative texts in each room relate highlights of the Macdonalds' stay here. Bellevue's staff will be happy to respond to your questions about the significance of the house and its famous occupant. Costumed staff in the historic house and on the restored grounds demonstrate a variety of mid-19th century activities. Half Day School Programs at Bellevue House
