Cave and Basin National Historic Site of Canada
Visitor Information
The Cave and Basin National Historic Site of Canada commemorates the birthplace of Canada's National Park system, which began here in 1885. The growth and development of Canada's national parks are celebrated in interactive displays and exhibits. Naturally occurring, warm mineral springs can be found inside the cave, and outside in an emerald coloured basin. There are also several interpretive trails in the area where visitors can see warm water fish, garter snakes, warm mineral pools and unique plants. The area offers good birding and hiking, and a paved cycle path to Sundance Canyon.
Enjoy new exhibits on the creation and evolution of Canada's national parks, and watch the "Steam, Schemes and National Dreams" video in our Bathhouse Theatre.
There are self-guiding "Discovery" and "Marsh" interpretive boardwalk trails where you can discover the rich history of the hot springs and explore the flora and fauna.
