Fortifications of Québec National Historic Site of Canada

Visitor Information

On-line Visit

The Fortifications of Québec National Historic Site of Canada is part of the network of historic sites managed by Parks Canada. Its main role is to ensure the protection and development of the walls and gates of the city (Québec, Canada), the Governors' Garden and Montmorency Park as well as other important places such as Dufferin Terrace and the Governors' walkway.

Stretching over 4.6 km, the walls and ramparts bear witness to the evolution of Québec's defensive system from the 17th to the 19th century.

Visit the powder magazine built in 1815 and watch the virtual reconstitution « Sketch of a fortified city », a journey among Québec's defensive structures of the 19th century.

Built in 1815, the Esplanade Powder Magazine is the only one that has been restored in Québec. It is only one of the many powder magazines found along the fortifications. It was used to store and handle gunpowder.

You can see the building only after crossing the enceinte of the protective wall. Built according to employee security regulations during the 19 th century, it is possible to observe certain characteristics particular to the building such as the archways, the double-sided walls, the arrangement of the air ducts along the building and the entrance to the storeroom that housed the barrels of powder.
