Happy Valley-Goose Bay has modern facilities catering to a full range of recreation and athletic activities for winter and summer. The unspoiled wilderness environment at our back door stretches for hundreds of kilometers in every direction and offers countless opportunities for world class hunting, fishing, photography and canoeing, just to name a few of the activities popular within the region.

5 Wing Goose Bay offers its own mix of recreation and leisure activity facilities. These include a full scale gymnasium encompassing a regulation size main gym, a separate badminton court (doubles as an exercise room), 2 squash courts, a fully equipped weight room, and two sauna baths.

The Billy Bishop Social Centre is complete with stage and a ballroom, (used as a bingo hall and various activities), and a seven kiln ceramic shop.

There is a swimming pool which is operated by the Provincial Government's Labrador Sports Training Centre. This pool is a non-military pool and as such there is an entrance fee required. Also active are a Judo Club, Swim Club and Gymnastic Club.

Also offered is a 10 bay Auto Hobby Club, and a fully equipped Wood Hobby Shop.

During winter months, x-country ski trails are available. Four tennis courts, two softball fields and a one kilometre 10 station fitness trail are also offered on the base and Happy Valley has a full golf course.

Alexander Lake, located at the foot of the Melville radar complex, approximately 8 kilometres from MQs, houses an excellent camp site and water front area. The lake abounds with small trout and is excellent for boating and fishing for children. (No motors are permitted on the lake).

Situated 52 air miles South of the Base is a fully equipped fish camp called No Name, owned and operated by Base Fund. It boasts some of the best trout fishing to be found anywhere.

Mont Shana, a locally run and operated enterprise, located some 20 kilometres from MQs, offers some excellent downhill skiing.

Some of the world's finest lakes and streams can be found in Labrador and supply excellent angling for all. For those who enjoy the sport of hunting, Happy Valley-Goose Bay offers rabbit, grouse and ptarmigan and for the more adventurous, there are moose, caribou and bear.
