Welcome to the Crops and Livestock Research Centre

Location

Located at 440 University Avenue in Charlottetown, capital city of the province of Prince Edward Island, on the east coast of Canada, the Crops and Livestock Research Centre (CLRC) is a part of the Research Branch of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

Mandate

The Research Branch mandate: The Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food promotes the development, adaptation and competitiveness of the agriculture and agri-food sector through policies and programs that are most appropriately provided by the federal government. The overall goal is to help the sector maximize its contribution to Canada's economic and environmental objectives and achieve a safe, high quality food supply while maintaining a strong foundation for the agriculture and agri-food sector and rural communities.

The CLRC's mandate is to provide scientific knowledge, and develop and transfer innovative technologies in integrated crop and livestock systems while enhancing and protecting the environment.

Resources

The Centre has 86 full-time staff, including 22 research scientists. Research is carried out at three sites: the Harrington and Home Farms in P.E.I., and the Nappan Research Farm in Nova Scotia. The main office-laboratory complex is located in Charlottetown at the Home Farm (65 ha). The Harrington Farm (330 ha), located 11 km north of the Home Farm, is where 80 percent of the Centre's field studies in potatoes, cereals, forages and soil tillage and conservation are conducted. The Nappan Research Farm (240 ha) is mainly involved with beef research, along with some forage and soils work.
