Government of Canada Announces Funding for the League of Human Rights of B'Nai Brith Canada

TORONTO, April 14, 2000 -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women), and the Honourable Art Eggleton, Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for York Centre, today announced funding of $77,000 to the League of Human Rights of B'Nai Brith Canada's Black/Jewish Dialogue: Learning From the Past to Build a Better Future.

"I am proud to support the League of Human Rights of B'Nai Brith Canada's Black/Jewish Dialogue: Learning From the Past to Build a Better Future," said Dr. Fry. "The Government of Canada is committed to building community partnerships and strengthening existing alliances within the community."

"I am very pleased to present this grant to the League for Human Rights of B'nai Brith Canada, on behalf of my colleague Dr. Hedy Fry. The whole community will benefit from the outstanding work of B'nai Brith Canada as they continue to promote a better understanding of our cultural diversity, particularly among youth," said Minister Eggleton.

The Black/Jewish Dialogue: Learning From the Past to Build a Better Future will provide a manual containing models of programming for Black and Jewish communities across the country, as well as adaptations for other joint community dialogues and initiatives. Forums focussing on the past, present and future of Black/Jewish relations have been planned, in addition to a photo exhibit which will be housed by the Ontario Black History Society.

Funding for the project is provided through the Department of Canadian Heritage's Multiculturalism Program. The Multiculturalism Program fosters Canadian identity and belonging, encourages all citizens to participate in shaping their communities and their country and creates a more just society by eliminating the barriers to society.

Funding for this activity was provided for in the February 2000 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
