The Government of Canada is Proud to be Associated with the Montréal 2000 and One Faces Event

MONTRÉAL, June 8, 2000 -- Secretary of State (Multiculturalism)(Status of Women) Hedy Fry today announced financial support of $20,000 to the Salles du Gesù for the Youth Events section of Montréal 2000 and One Faces. This cultural event will take place from August 10 to October 1, in Montréal.

"Young Canadians are keen to express their ideas, viewpoints and vision of a society based on harmony. They are also aware of Canada's cultural diversity, a valuable asset. Montréal 2000 and One Faces is celebrating harmony among citizens of different origins and, through the Youth Events section, affording young people an opportunity to speak out against racism and discrimination," Dr. Fry noted.

Nearly 2,000 young people will participate, in a fraternal spirit, in projects focusing on the themes of non-violence, tolerance and harmony. Participants will use the medium of their choice, such as music, song, dance, painting, graffiti, poetry or the performing arts, to communicate their joy in gathering together. The dissemination of their artistic creations reflects their spirit of collaboration and feeling of belonging to the same culture.

The Department of Canadian Heritage has provided this financial support to the Youth Events section of the Montréal 2000 and One Faces event under its Multiculturalism Program. Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2000 budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
